This is the first in a series of articles providing how-to's for the job seeker. Each article provides tips on goal setting, grounding yourself and doing the legwork.
Staying on task is difficult no matter what the project. When you are seeking new employment, there are pitfalls that beset the best of intentions. How do you stay engaged and focused when distractions and the sheer stress of it make you want to run for the hills?
Clarity is important, right from the start. Whether you are employed or one of the millions (9.8% of the population) who are unemployed, your goal is the same; and that is, to receive the job offer. In fact, several offers would be ideal, allowing you a choice.
Begin at the Beginning
A job loss is very unsettling. Creating the mindset that allows you to move forward toward your goal takes being ready to begin. Start with accomplishing a few tasks; this builds confidence and organization. Each task you check off the list is a task completed, and that is a satisfying feeling.
A sense of accomplishment, however small, can aid in balancing the initial feelings. Topping your to-do list is finding space to work and the tools you will need for your job search. With tools in place and the right mind set, you gain solid footing beneath you; this is your grounding.
Setting Up You, Inc.
What do you already have in place? What requires your attention? You don't need an office, but you do need space dedicated to your project. Essential is computer access to search for jobs, as they are all online these days. Hiring companies will be calling you to set up appointments, so a phone that is free of children's voices is useful too. You may want to use your cell phone as your primary contact number. A calendar, three-ring binder to organize your search, along with plastic pages to hold business cards all help in organizing. Make a list of what you need, and start this project.
Goal Setting
Simple steps in the beginning help to reframe your attention toward your new goal. Take a tip from folks who achieve their goals through setting intention: post reminder signs on the fridge and on mirrors. These serve to help you re-focus your attention when you are sidetracked. A personal note to self that says, "Job Offers" can be your signal to re-engage and stay on target
